Helen Marie Mantel

Helen Marie Mantel, 86, of Springfield, died on Easter Sunday March 23, 2008 in Mercy St. John’s Center, after a long battle with Alzheimer’s disease.

She was born December 4, 1921 to John and Helen (Juenger) Mantel in Portsmouth, Ohio.

She graduated from Wittenberg University. She worked in Washington D.C. and at Wright Patterson Air Force Base. She taught at St. Raphael and St. Bernard Schools and retired from Kenwood Elementary School. Helen was associated with the Dominican Sisters of the Poor for many years. She also managed the Treasure Chest Thrift Center for Catholic Social Services, was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, Alpha Delta Kappa, Rosary Making Guild, Legion of Mary, Women’s Auxiliary of Catholic Social Services, Ohio Retired Teachers Association, was a volunteer for Springfield Reading Aids and enjoyed bowling with the Teachers League. Her true passion was giving and doing for those less fortunate.

Helen was preceded in death by her parents, three brothers, Robert (Ruth), James and Jack and one sister, Kate.

Survivors include one sister Mary Ann (Paul) Tayloe; sister-in-law, Janet Mantel both of Springfield; many nieces and nephews including Karen Tayloe of Sprinfield, whom she lived with for many years, Sharon Detrick of Bellbrook, Mark (Kathy) Tayloe of Springfield, Michael Tayloe of San Francisco, Kevin (Ilene) Mantel of Columbus, Carol (Dudley) Wolfe of Dayton and Kathleen, John, Patrick and Peter Mantel all of Springfield; She is also survived by many great nieces and nephews, cousins and good friend, Nancy Zerkle.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday in St. Joseph Church. Visitation will begin at 9:30 a.m. Thursday in Conroy Funeral Home. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery.
